Avocent® Announces First Integrated Solution of Serial over LAN
and Console Management
Enables Access to IPMI for Simplified Data
Center Management
HUNTSVILLE,
Ala., August 8, 2005 – Avocent Corporation
(NASDAQ: AVCT) extends its leadership in providing connectivity
solutions with the addition of IPMI Serial over LAN (SoL)
functionality to its CCM console management appliances. Intelligent
Platform Management Interface (IPMI) and SoL are rapidly gaining
momentum as the next-generation industry standard for server and
data center device management. IPMI-enabled servers are currently
shipping from Dell, IBM and other OEMs.
The multi-port
Avocent CCM appliances offer administrators the key benefit of
simplified cable management of network and server assets with both
physical ports for wired connections and virtual ports for
connecting to IPMI-enabled devices over the LAN. Virtual serial
ports will provide industry-standard Telnet and SSH clients with
cable-free serial console access to IPMI-enabled servers. Serial
over LAN functionality will be available within the 8, 16 and
48-port CCM appliances.
“IPMI and Serial over LAN are
exciting technologies that ease the daily challenge of maintaining a
healthy data center,” said Dave Perry, executive vice president of
global sales. “With our business strategy, OEM relationships and
dedication to research and development of IPMI management appliances
and software, Avocent is committed to a leadership role in the
advancement of standards-based management within the
enterprise.”
The Avocent family of IPMI products, managed by
DSView® 3 management software, also includes the DSI5100 proxy
appliance. It supports 64 IPMI connections and provides a
browser-based, out-of-band interface to securely monitor and control
power and system health on IPMI-enabled servers.
Demonstrations of Serial over LAN functionality in CCM
appliances will take place in the Avocent booth (#454) at LinuxWorld
in San Francisco, Aug. 9-11. General availability is later this
month.
