Companies that will soon have a presence in the HudsonAlpha Institute

Here is a roster of companies that will begin moving into the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology over the next two months.

Applied Genomics

Founded in 2000 with offices in Huntsville and California. Will move six employees into HudsonAlpha. CEO Rob Seitz says the company "comes up with new products for targeted diagnostics to improve treatments for cancer patients and helping patients tailor treatment with their physicians."

CFD Research

Founded in Huntsville in 1987. Does engineering simulations and design. Has 100 employees, including 12 who will move into HudsonAlpha. Ashok Singhal is president and CEO.

Expression Genetics

Incorporated in Huntsville in 2002. Makes new cancer therapeutics, CEO Danny Lewis says. Has 12 employees who will move into HudsonAlpha.

ExtremoZyme

Founded in Huntsville in 2006. Has seven employees. Conducts research using microorganisms recovered from environments with extreme biophysical parameters, to contribute new biological sources for molecular engineering, food processing, materials fabrication, energy production and drug synthesis.

Microarrays

Opened in 2001 in Nashville. Has five employees and plans to add three in the next six months. Makes microarrays, glass slides spotted with a grid of DNA molecules with each "spot" complementary to a specific gene, CEO Joel Peek says.

Open Biosystems

Opened in Huntsville in 2002. Will move about 60 employees into HudsonAlpha, and CEO Brian Pollock expects business to begin there by Dec. 17. Pollock calls the company the "Library of Congress of genetic information," selling all the genes and research tools needed to understand the roles that genes play in disease.

Serina Therapeutics

Co-founded in Huntsville last November by Milton Harris and Michael Bentley, former principals of Shearwater. Employs eight people and expects to move into HudsonAlpha in January. Develops new classes of biocompatible polymers - material compatible with living cells, tissues and organs when brought into contact or implanted into them - that will improve the performance of pharmaceuticals.

Founded in 2001 in Huntsville and has nine employees here. Focuses on cystic fibrosis, offering new treatment options, assisting therapies and cost-effective choices. Michael Walters is CEO.
