Service will start Nov. 8; next up Fort Lauderdale? Low-fare airline Allegiant Air is already announcing a second destination from Huntsville International Airport - a direct flight to Orlando, Fla., starting Nov. 8 - before it even starts service here. The new nonstop Orlando flights will be three days a week - on Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday. Flights will leave Huntsville at 3:10 p.m. and arrive at Orlando Sanford International Airport at 5:55 p.m. ( all local times). Flights will leave Orlando at 1:55 p.m. and arrive in Huntsville at 2:35 p.m. The introductory fare starts at $49 each way, when booked on the airline's Web site, www.allegiantair.com. Those tickets must be bought by Sept. 22. After that, the regular one-way fare starts at $69. Allegiant flights will use 150-seat, MD-80 series jets. The low fares, use of full-sized jets and nonstop service to Orlando should "stimulate traffic in that market and increase it by more than 50 percent," said Eric Woodson, director, marketing and sales for Las Vegas-based Allegiant. He made the Orlando announcement Tuesday in Huntsville at the Southern Adventures water park. Allegiant will start nonstop flights from Huntsville to Las Vegas on Sept. 21. Brent "Dingo" Crank, a radio personality at WDRM-HD1 FM 102.1, also announced an SOS (Show of Support) campaign to encourage Allegiant to add service to Fort Lauderdale, Fla. He said that 50,000 "votes" are needed "to make this happen." Those interested should visit www.wdrm.com or www.huntsvillehotticket.com "Las Vegas, Orlando and potentially Fort Lauderdale - this is fantastic news for us today," said Rick Tucker, the airport's executive director. The $49 one-way introductory fare is limited and not available on all flights, and travel must be completed by Feb. 10. |
