3 local companies recognized by Black Enterprise

Nine Alabama companies - three of them in Huntsville - are among the nation's top-grossing black-owned businesses in 2007, according to the 35th annual BE 100s report in the June issue of Black Enterprise magazine.

Huntsville-based Logistics & Environmental Support Services Inc. and Tec-Masters Inc. were both ranked No. 63 on the BE Industrial/Service 100 list, each with $64 million in sales; and Huntsville Autoplex, a Dodge and Lexus dealer, was No. 42 on the BE Auto Dealer 100 list, with $58.9 million in sales.

Tec-Masters provides engineering, information systems technology, logistics support, multimedia and management services. Its chief executive is Marvin P. Carroll. Logistics & Environmental Support Services provides logistics, information technology and program management services to the federal government. Its chief executive is Anita B. Williams.

The chief executive at Huntsville Autoplex is Ellenae Fairhurst.

The magazine's list includes a total of 275 businesses: 100 industrial/service companies, 100 auto dealerships, 60 financial services firms and 15 advertising agencies. Other Alabama companies on the lists are Trillion Communications Corp., Bessemer; Calhoun Enterprises, Montgomery; Jordan Frazier Chrysler Jeep Dodge, Bessemer; Bayview Ford Lincoln Mercury LLC, Daphne; Anthony Underwood Automotive, Bessemer; and First Tuskegee Bank, Tuskegee.

To be eligible for the BE Industrial/Service 100 list, a company must be at least 51 percent black-owned and have been fully operational for the previous calendar year (Jan. 1, 2006 through Dec. 31, 2006). Companies listed must manufacture or own the products they sell or provide industrial or consumer services.
