Seattle-based Andrews workson Ares I, K-1 rocket projects

Andrews Space Inc. has opened an office in Huntsville to strengthen its business and expand its role in space exploration and national defense initiatives, the Seattle-based company said.

Andrews is an integrator of aerospace systems and specializes in systems engineering and integration, the company said in a news release.

"Our Huntsville office will focus on supporting existing customers while pursuing new business that takes advantage of our unique capabilities," said Marian Joh, Andrews CEO. "Being in Huntsville allows us to better serve NASA, the Department of Defense, and other local customers with immediate and direct support."

Andrews supports Alliant Techsystems on the Ares I rocket first stage, performing safety and mission assurance and other systems engineering functions.

Andrews is also working with Rocketplane Kistler to develop the K-1, a fully reusable launch vehicle for NASA's Commercial Orbital Transportation Services, or COTS, program.

"Ares I and COTS are both critical to our country's exploration efforts," said Jason Andrews, president of Andrews. "We are excited to establish and grow our presence in Huntsville. Our mission is to be a catalyst in the development and commercialization of space, and Huntsville plays a critical role in these endeavors."

Andy Crocker is manager of Huntsville operations. Crocker said Andrews has a small office in Huntsville but plans to grow quickly.
