Cingular Wireless plans to invest more than $145 million in its Alabama and Northwest Florida network this year as it aims to provide its customers with improved coverage, service and call quality.

Meanwhile, a Cingular spokesperson said that the proposed $67 billion merger between AT&T and BellSouth will not change the company's vision. Cingular is jointly owned by AT&T and BellSouth. "It's great news for Cingular because it will unlock even more potential to better serve our customers,'' said Dawn Benton, Cingular's senior public relations manager for four Southeastern states.

The merger would streamline Cingular's service, said Ron Sleeper, director of sales in Alabama.

With its $145 million investment, Cingular plans to add 29 new cell sites and continue the integration of the former AT&T Wireless Network, which the company acquired in 2004.

In Madison County, Cingular plans to add one new cell site and integrate 22 sites to enhance service in Huntsville and Madison. Cingular also plans to enhance its service in Morgan and Limestone counties.
