Equity One and Publix executives broke ground Thursday on a shopping center at Winchester and Homer Nance roads that will include the sixth Publix supermarket in Madison County.

The L-shaped center, Winchester Plaza, will have at least 10 retail stores besides Publix, said Jay Levy, asset manager with Equity One Realty & Management SE Inc., a division of Equity One Inc., which owns, develops and operates shopping centers across the South.

The 45,600-square-foot Publix store will be the anchor of Winchester Plaza. Leases have been signed with several tenants - Cuts By Us, the gift shop Two Friends and a nail salon.

The retail spaces are to be turned over to tenants in May 2006, said Levy. The Publix store is scheduled to open early next summer.

"We're excited about this project and about Publix being here," Levy said.

The retail shops are to stretch out on either side of the supermarket facing Winchester and a line of more stores will face Homer Nance Road.

Four outparcels - three fronting Winchester and another on Homer Nance - are also available for lease or sale. Another nine acres to the east of the shopping center will be marketed, probably for neighborhood office/professional uses.

Reed Contracting Service is the site contractor at Winchester Plaza, and Benning Construction Co. in Atlanta is the building contractor.
