Huntsville Mayor Loretta Spencer has been named the 2005 Tourism Advocate Award in the government category for her contributions to the travel industry.

The award was announced Tuesday at the Alabama Governor's Conference on Tourism at the Embassy Suites hotel in Montgomery, according to a news release. Spencer was honored for securing funding to build a $4.7 million Convention and Visitors Bureau office and visitors center downtown.

Spencer's work to bring the new Embassy Suites hotel to downtown Huntsville and the creation of the Huntsville Sports Commission were also noted. When the new hotel is completed in 2006, the city will have 600 hotel rooms downtown, making Huntsville eligible for larger conferences.

The sports commission recruits sports events to the city that bring in more overnight visitors.
