More than 40 contenders will compete in the 20th annual Small Business of the Year celebration on Aug. 23 presented by the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce and First Commercial Bank.
The event spotlights area companies/organizations and leaders demonstrating excellence in six categories.
"The celebration allows Madison County to showcase our true local talent," said event Chairman Mary Grace Evans. Companies range in size from one to 350 employees and are judged on community involvement, innovativeness of products/services, financial strength, growth, number of years in business and response to adversity.
The contenders for the Executive of the Year category are Ron Gray, Gray Research Inc.; Robert F. Coates Jr., Avis Rent-A-Car System/Coates Motor Rental; Derrick Copeland, Applied Data Trends Inc.; Hank Perkins, Perkins Technical Services Inc.; and John R. Hamilton, Taos Industries Inc.
The contenders for the categories of business services, manufacturing and construction, technology, wholesale/retail/personal services are Media Idea, Applied Data Trends Inc., Jedori PC Services Inc., Padgett Business Services, All Points Logistics, Shearer & Associates Inc., F1 Solutions Inc., Navigator Development Group Inc., Gray Research Inc., Woodland Homes of Huntsville, R&D Electronics Inc., and All Seasons 500 Heating and Air.
Also, Green Mountain Soap Co. Inc., A Realty Group of North Alabama, Grogan Jewelers, Glenn Campbell Photography, Two Men & A Truck, Crystal Mountain Natural Spring Water/The Roberts Group, Platinum Mortgage Inc., System Studies & Simulation Inc., Decibel Research Inc., Baron Services, Intuitive Research & Technology Corp., Qualis Corp., Bevilacqua Research Corp., Will Technology Inc., 3D Research Corp. and Torch Technologies.
The non-profit category contenders are U.S. Space Camp Foundation, LandTrust of Huntsville/North Alabama, American Red Cross, Family Services Center, Junior Achievement of North Alabama, Huntsville Botanical Garden, Sci-Quest, The Volunteer Center of Madison County, The ARC of Madison County and Huntsville Art League.
The event will be held in the North Hall of the Von Braun Center. A reception begins at 5:30 p.m. with dinner at 6 p.m. Individual seats are $55 and reserved tables of eight are $440 through Aug. 15.
This year's presenting sponsor is First Commercial Bank. Golden Crown Sponsors include Community Bank and Redstone Federal Credit Union. The Huntsville Times is the Media Sponsor.
