State business organizations give annual awards

Alabama 's largest aerospace manufacturer, Boeing Co. in Huntsville , was named the Large Manufacturer of the Year for 2005 Wednesday by the Business Council of Alabama and the Alabama Technology Network.

Boeing Huntsville won in the category for companies with 300 or more employees.

The Manufacturer of the Year awards program recognizes enterprises that exhibit excellence in leadership, performance, profitability and workforce relations.

Other awards included Austal USA in Mobile, Medium Manufacturer of the Year; Weyerhaeuser Distribution and Remanufacturing Center in Tuscumbia, Small Manufacturer of the Year; and IPSCO Steel (Alabama) Inc., in Mobile, Emerging Manufacturer of the Year.

Boeing Huntsville produces key components of the International Space Station and key missile defense products at nine complexes in Huntsville . The firm contributes $1.2 billion a year to Alabama 's economy, according to a recent University of Alabama study. Boeing plans to keep growing in Alabama , with $26 million budgeted over the next six years in capital investment and improvements alone. From 2000 to 2004, Boeing Huntsville doubled sales from $1.2 billion to $2.5 billion.

Boeing Huntsville is one of the state's largest employers, with 2,700 employees. A 2004 University of Alabama study showed that, for every 100 direct jobs at Boeing Huntsville, 185 indirect jobs are created, meaning that its operations account for more than 9,000 direct and indirect state jobs.
