Computer Sciences Corp. recently received the James S. Cogswell Outstanding Industrial Security Achievement Award at a ceremony in Dallas.

Since 1989, CSC has received the Cogswell Award 18 times. Teresa Garland, facility security officer, Huntsville, and Bob Birmingham, vice president, Army programs Southeast region operations, were presented the award by Stephen Lewis, deputy director of the Defense Security Service.

The Cogswell Award is the most prestigious honor for companies with security clearance. Of nearly 11,000 cleared contractors, only eight companies were selected to receive the Defense Security Service Award this year.

The award selection process is rigorous. Facilities are nominated by their assigned DSS industrial security representatives, based on the security criteria and two consecutive industrial security reviews which show a sustained degree of excellence in program requirements.

Nominations are then submitted throughout all levels of DSS field organization for endorsement and vetting. A national review team consolidates and ranks the nominations, which in turn are submitted to senior management for final endorsement and approval.

The award is named in the honor of the late Air Force Col. James S. Cogswell, the first chief of the unified office of Industrial Security.
