Madison-based CTA Inc. has been acquired by Pratt & Whitney, one of the world's largest makers of commercial and military aircraft engines, company officials said Tuesday.

CTA builds robotic systems for precision coating work and materials handling for manufacturing of commercial and military aircraft.

Founded in 1996 by David Henry and David Mathias, CTA employs about 50 people. Henry and Mathias met while working for United Technologies in Huntsville. United Technologies is the parent company for Pratt & Whitney.

CTA announced last May that it received a five-year, $35 million contract from Lockheed Martin to perform stealth-material application for parts on the Air Force's F/A 22 Raptor jet fighter.

Company officials were not available for comment Tuesday.

A Pratt & Whitney spokesman said CTA's business fits in well with its new owners.

"The thing that attracted us to CTA was the synergies realized with the technologies of the companies," said Dan Coulom, public relations manager for Pratt & Whitney. "Its reputation in the industry and customer relations were also attractive to us."

Pratt & Whitney is based in East Hartford, Conn.

Coulom said CTA's management team will remain in place.
