CAS Inc. broke ground Tuesday on an 80,000-square-foot building in Thornton Research Park on Old Madison Pike, the first phase of a new office complex where all of the company's Huntsville-based operations will be consolidated.

The new CAS "campus" will ultimately provide offices for about 700 of the more than 850 current employees throughout the United States and overseas. CAS is a Department of Defense weapon systems analysis contractor.

"In this, the year that CAS recognizes its 25th anniversary of business in Huntsville, we are very proud to have the groundbreaking for this first phase of the CAS Huntsville campus," said Bill Stender, the chief executive officer of CAS. "We look forward to the continued development of this campus so that we can eventually bring all CAS personnel in Huntsville into one geographic area."

CAS was incorporated in 1979 and, early the next year, won its first contract to provide systems engineering and technical assistance for the Patriot Project Office in Huntsville. The company continues to support Patriot and the Lower Tier Project Office, along with command, control and communications, air and missile defense, tactical missiles, aviation systems and strategic defense, including homeland security.

For its support in theater during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm, CAS also received the Department of Defense's award for patriotic civilian service. CAS now has personnel deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Huntsville-based Triad Properties will develop the single-story research and development building. The completion date and occupancy is scheduled for Sept. 30, 2004. The building was designed by Fuqua Osborn architects and will be owned by Tera Properties LLC.
