Wal-Mart speeds work on new store

Retailer agrees to pay for part of road in Hampton Cove

Hampton Cove will get a Super Wal-Mart sooner than expected.

The retail giant has agreed to pay for part of one of the city feeder roads to avoid bureaucratic delays. The Huntsville City Council authorized a development deal Thursday night that requires Wal-Mart to pay for 600 feet of road improvements to Taylor Road.

City planner Marie Bostick said the work otherwise couldn't have started until right-of-way issues were resolved on remaining portions of Taylor. That would have delayed the road work until 2006, records show.

Construction on the northern 600 feet of Taylor Road, along with improvements to Sutton Road, must be completed by November to meet the construction timetable of the store.

Bostick said Wal-Mart will bear the full cost of the front portion of Taylor. The state is covering the cost of other improvements to Taylor and Sutton roads.
