City airport may reach 1M passenger for year

Huntsville International Airport is on track to have more than 1 million passengers for the year, for the first time since the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, officials said Tuesday.

The number of passengers flying in and out of the airport reached 959,577 through November. The total number of passengers last year was 902,766, 900,295 in 2001 and just over 1 million in 2000.

Passenger traffic was 87,973 in November, the third consecutive month this year with an increase above 9 percent over the same month in 2002.

Because of the record numbers of vehicles parked at the airport's lots in 2003, the Huntsville/Madison County Airport Authority has put $500,000 in the airport's budget next year for research and design phases for additional parking. Parking is $1 for each hour in all lots, with a daily maximum of $12 for hourly parking, $8 for levels two through six of the deck and $6 for the economy lot. The first 15 minutes are free.

A 10-minute free waiting area was recently opened in front of the terminal building.
