According to a 130-page report issued this week by one of the world's largest auditing firms, the U.S. biotech industry will not fare well this year. In its 23rd annual statement on the industry, Ernst & Young reported that the current financial crisis - marked by a lack of capital and a glut of a fear from investors over anything slightly risky - is threatening biotech's ability to fund the long and expensive process of testing new drugs. Without enough means for research and development, those biotech companies can't get new drugs on the market, meaning they can't make money. Continue »

Industrial employment in Alabama fell 4.5 percent over the past 12 months, according to the 2009 Alabama Manufacturers Register. The Register, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers' News, reported Monday that Alabama lost 15,479 industrial jobs and 108 manufacturers between March 2008 and March 2009, the steepest loss the directory has reported for the state. The Evanston, Ill.-based publishing company has been surveying industry since 1912. Continue »

The University of Alabama in Huntsville received approval Tuesday to hire ex-NASA Administrator Michael Griffin as an eminent scholar and tenured professor. UAH will use part of a 20-year-old fund for the position that hasn't been tapped to bring him to the school's department of mechanical and aerospace engineering. Meanwhile, Madison County reported the state's second-lowest jobless rate, at 6.2 percent, in February. Still, there were 5,000 more unemployed residents here than in February 2008.
