The Arts Council

Founded in October 1962, The Arts Council, Inc. (TAC) is a private, non-profit arts organization. TAC produces, promotes, coordinates, and advances the arts to enrich the quality of life, economic development, and education of the greater Huntsville/Madison County community. It fulfills its mission through five core programs:  Arts in Education, Panoply Arts Festival, Concerts in the Park, support to our Member Organizations, and Community Information Services.   • Concerts in the Park – sixteen weeks of free summer concerts in Big International Spring Park, beginning in June and co-produced with the City of Huntsville. Enjoy jazz, rock, classical, big band, country, and everything in between at these “Concerts Under the Stars!”

  • Panoply Arts Festival - aan annual, family-friendly three-day outdoor festival held the last full weekend of April and featuring performances, exhibits, arts demos, FREE hands-on activities, the Global Village, the Official Alabama State Fiddling Championship, and competitions in choreography, photography, “Homegrown Talent,” and play writing. Consistently ranked as one of the Southeast’s “Top Twenty” events, Panoply is The South’s Most All-Embracing ARTStravaganza!.

  • art@TAC and the JavaGalleria – two new galleries (located in the halls of the Von Braun Center and at Sam and Greg’s Gelateria/Pizzeria, respectively) allow a focus on the visual realm as exemplified through the masterworks of local and regional artists.  art@TAC also features the creations of area children.

Merrimack Hall Performing Arts Center

Merrimack Hall presents an eclectic blend of performing arts events including Off-Broadway productions, touring troupes, music events, and master classes, as well as nationally-recognized musicians, choreographers, and actors. With a 300-seat performance hall, this intimate venue’s historic charm, accessibility, and state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems provide an excellent experience for the audience. Broadway Theatre League

The Broadway Theatre League brings to Huntsville each year a line-up of top touring shows, classic musicals and cutting-edge new shows. Some star internationally known performers. All shows are professionally presented in the Von Braun Center Concert Hall.

Fantasy Playhouse Children's Theater and Academy

For more than 40 years Fantasy Playhouse Children's Theater has been bringing the magic of theater to young people in this area. Delightful costumes, elaborate scenery and plays that spark the youthful imagination are standard fare at Fantasy. Children of all ages participate and so do many adults. Each holiday season, Fantasy's production of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" is a Yuletide tradition in Huntsville. Fantasy also offers year-round theater classes for all ages and a Kindermusik program at its arts center.

Independent Musical Productions

In 1993, a group of professional theatre people formed a community company in order to produce Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd.” People came from throughout the region to be a part of the production. The curtain went up, and Independent Musical Productions was born. Since that opening night, Independent Musical Productions has won acclaim with its professional quality performances and showcases some of Huntsville’s finest talent. IMP has two productions each year (usually June and September) and one major fundraiser in January.

IMP is a proud member of the Arts Council since 1994 and the Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville/Madison County since 2002. It has won numerous awards and grants while presenting a variety of programming, representing the best of musical theater for this area.

IMP's status as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization means that donations are 100 percent tax-deductible. Producing large-scale musicals is an expensive operation. Renaissance Theatre

Located in a renovated outbuilding associated with historic Lincoln Mill Village, Renaissance Theatre presents a diverse season of plays, from classics to experimental works, on their MainStage and AlphaStage. Upcoming plays include “Doubt, A Parable” and “Mill Stories:  Memories.”

Theatre Huntsville

Theatre Huntsville, a non-profit community theater, was formed in 1997 through the merger of Huntsville Little Theatre (1950-1997) and Twickenham Repertory Company (1979-1997). Each year, a variety of plays are produced, ranging from Shakespeare to Agatha Christie, Clare Boothe Luce, Larry Shue, and Michael Frayn.



Address: Six “Main Stage” plays presented in Von Braun Center Playhouse, 700 Monroe Street.  The summer Season Extra,  "Shakespeare on the Mountain," is presented in outdoor venues such as Burritt on the Mountain.

Ars Nova School of the Art

Ars Nova, Incorporated is a non-profit organization dedicated to the performing arts, with an emphasis on music. Operated under its auspices are a school for training in voice, music, and theatre in addition to a production company which performs plays, musicals, and operas.

Valley Conservatory

The Valley Conservatory is a music service center with programs designed to develop all aspects of the students’ mind, body and character. Our programs incorporate the Holistic Approach to Learning to develop the “total student” through the medium of music.

The Valley Conservatory specializes in four areas:

    Flying Monkey Arts Center is a nonprofit community arts collective that encourages, supports and promotes events, workshops and studios featuring but not limited to music, film, theater, dance, puppetry, visual and performance art with a focus on experimental works for mature audiences. The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra

The Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, directed by Carlos Miguel Prieto, presents a six-concert Classical Series, a three-concert pop series and a four-concert Mainly Mozart Series at the Von Braun Center Convert Hall.

Huntsville is fortunate to have a fully professional orchestra whose members come from a number of cities throughout the state. The 2004-05 season's guest artists included such performers as Yo-Yo Ma and Art Garfunkel.

Huntsville Community Chorus Association

HCCA, the area's oldest performing arts organization, began in 1946; its name changed from Trichoral to HCCA in 1950. This nonprofit organization offers the best in both choral music (an adult chorus and a premier chorale group) and, through its melodrama and summer productions, musical theater. HCCA provides learning opportunities for children and young adults through scholarships and through sponsorship of two children’s choruses and the Madrigal Singers. There are opportunities for all ages to perform or work behind the scenes. Chorus membership is by audition, typically held prior to the fall season.

    The Huntsville Chamber Music Guild, which will begin its 52nd season, began as an informal group of musicians performing for their own enjoyment.     The nonprofit organization aims to preserve and perpetuate traditional music, instruments and styles of rendition. The Dance Company, Inc. offers a complete dance curriculum for all ages and abilities. The Company stresses proper technique and performance with classes ranging from the specialized program for pre-schoolers to tap, jazz, acrobatics, ballet and pointe on advanced levels.

    The Community Ballet Association is now in its 39th season of presenting dance in Huntsville. The ballet school and the Huntsville Ballet Company are housed in a building near Parkway Place. Top guest dancers, such as the Hubbard Street Dance Chicago and the North Carolina Dance Theatre, are brought to town. The ballet company's annual production of "The Nutcracker" is a local holiday tradition that usually sells out.
