NORTH ALABAMA "CALL TO ACTION" FOR "1
MILLION BOTTLES OF WATER FOR HAITI" COMMUNITY EVENT
Huntsville, AL - Over 1 month ago an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.0
devastated the country of Haiti. The death toll has been
estimated at 300,000 with an estimated two million people
homeless. To date more than 25 million liters of safe drinking
water has been distributed to Haiti since the earthquake. An
effort to distribute 1 million bottles of water to the island from
Alabama was soon initiated by Montgomery native Liletta Motley and
presented to Rep. Thad McClammy, D-Montgomery.
Council Richard Showers stated "Bring your bottles and cases of
water for this worthy cause. The people of Haiti need our
help."
Several North Alabama drop-off locations include Progressive Union P.B.
Church, Richard Showers Center, Union Chapel M.B. Church, Tailgaters
BBQ, City of Huntsville, Fire Station #1 and City of Huntsville, Fire
Station #7.
The North Alabama Water for Haiti Effort will hold a community rally on
February 27th from 10 AM to 2 PM at the Union Chapel Missionary Baptist
Church. The objective of this rally will be to assist in the collection
of 1 million bottles of water to be delivered to Haiti. To date,
over 500,000 bottles of water have been collected from across the
state.
The North Alabama group of elected officials is requesting individuals,
faith-based groups, businesses and organizations to donate cases and
crates of water during the community event that will feature
volunteers, bands, testimonials and motivational speeches from
community leaders.
Rep. Laura Hall, D-Huntsville, stated, "The people of Alabama have
answered a call to help the people of Haiti. This type of
organizing gives people on all levels an opportunity to contribute and
change lives."
Organizers of the event include State Representative Laura Hall, County
Commissioner Bob Harrison, City Councilman Richard Showers, City
Councilman Will Culver and School Board Representative Laurie
McCaulley, along with State Representative Mac McCutcheon, State
Representative Phil Williams, and Tailgaters BBQ.
Rep. Mac McCutcheon, R-Capshaw, states "The "One Million
Bottles of Water" campaign is a way that we can help. I
encourage each and everyone in the Madison County area to give to this
worthwhile campaign and let's be part of God's Love and Grace to a
people who desperately need our help!"
Supporting partners include the City of Huntsville, Madison County
Commission, North Alabama African American Chamber of Commerce, NAACP,
Greater Huntsville Interdenominational Ministerial Fellowship,
Huntsville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Coca-Cola, WEUP, WJAB,
First Missionary Baptist Church, Union Chapel Missionary Baptist Church
and Progressive Union P.B. Church.
"Water for Haiti" is a voluntary group of concerned people
that have rallied together to send bottles of water to the citizens of
Haiti. The group has been aided in their efforts through
cooperation with elected officials, clergy, businesses and the general
public.
