Companies Named ‘Best Places to Work’ in Huntsville/Madison County
Charlie Kettle, president of First Commercial Bank and vice chair of investor relations for the Chamber receives a plaque from Bob Baron, President and CEO of Baron Services. First Commercial Bank was the presenting sponsor of the Best Places to Work awards luncheon on April 22.

Fifteen companies were selected as the “Best Places to Work” in Huntsville/Madison County at an awards luncheon Tuesday, April 22. The event, held at the Westin, was hosted by the Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville/Madison County, the North Alabama Society for Human Resource Management and the National Children’s Advocacy Center.

The host organizations worked with volunteers to create the event, presented by First Commercial Bank, to unveil Huntsville/Madison County’s outstanding employers whose benefits, policies and practices are among the region’s best. More than 100 businesses were initially nominated for the award.

Winners were based solely on a survey completed by employees and were selected in three categories: organizations with between 25 and 74 employees; organizations with between 75 and 249 employees and employers with 250 employees or more. Continue »

Government Services Contractor Expands Headquarters

QuantiTech, Inc., recently announced plans to expand its headquarters in Huntsville to better meet the needs of its Department of Defense customers.

QuantiTech, a minority woman-owned government services contractor, specializes in providing a variety of engineering solutions, services and tools for Department of Defense clients, including the U.S. Army’s Aviation and Missile Command; the U.S. Army’s Program Executive Office (PEO) for Aviation and the Missile Defense Agency. The company was incorporated in 1991 with one employee, currently has 31 employees, and plans to expand to 50 employees by the end of the year. It expanded to larger office space in the Technology Pointe office complex at 7027 Old Madison Pike. Continue »

TRC Entering Top of the Third Inning

Volunteers have just completed the second inning of the 2008 TRC Campaign and have brought in more than $852,000 to support economic growth in our community. Lead off hitters for this week were: Jennifer Middleton, Comcast; 2nd: Joe Knoch, Air Essentials; and 3rd: Sofia Bledsoe, Bevilacqua. Top Teams for Campaign are The Rocket City All Stars, led by Joe Green, SAIC and Regina Underwood, A Realty Group; A League of Their Own, led by Carrie McCrillis, Kelly Services/Marianne Windham, Windham Entertainment; and the Regions Cabos Bravos, led by Lee Lester, Regions Bank. Our Top Rookie was Jennifer Middleton, Comcast.

Missile Defense Agency Breaks Ground on New 900,000 Square Foot Facility

The U.S. Missile Defense Agency officially broke ground Friday on an 840,000-square foot building that will house more than 2,000 workers. The building is named Von Braun III and will be located next to the Von Braun I and Von Braun II offices at Redstone Arsenal.

The six story VB III building, called the “crowning jewel in the entire Von Braun Complex” by MDA’s Director, Lt Gen Henry Obering, will provide continuity of operations and mission as the Agency responds to the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) decision. Continue »

Networking Variety

Chamber members were thrilled with the various networking opportunities available on Thursday, April 24th at the Chamber’s Business After Hours Event hosted by The Heritage Club. Over 200 people were greeted by Chamber Ambassadors and Emissaries and surrounded with the exquisite décor provided by The Heritage Club. The rooms were filled with an array of exported chesses, stuffed ravioli, Bananas Foster Flambé and stuffed crabs along with a selection of wine and beer.

The Heritage Club’s time honored tradition of “Membership by Invitation” was extended to attendees through the Partnership with the Chamber of Commerce Foundation. The Club replaced the standard initiation fee of $500.00 with a donation of $100.00 to the Chamber of Commerce Foundation paid by a Chamber Member. Many donations were collected for the Chamber of Commerce Foundation. The next Business after Hours event will be held Thursday, May 15th hosted by Marriott Huntsville. Verizon Wireless Unveils Data Solutions Lab at Huntsville Call Center/State Headquarters

Verizon Wireless unveiled a new Data Solutions Lab at its Huntsville Call Center and state headquarters. The lab is designed for devices used on the company's network to meet the highest standards of reliability and provides customers with the best possible wireless experience.

"The work that's done here is key to Verizon Wireless' industry leadership and will support our customer base throughout Alabama and the United States," said Peter Kurth, Data Solutions manager for Verizon Wireless, Alabama. "This quality assurance approach is one of the reasons more people use our brand than any other wireless brand."

The first of its kind in Alabama, the Data Solutions Lab helps employees trouble-shoot and assist nationwide government accounts. The lab provides hands-on demonstrations; training on advanced PDA devices and new products; server setup and integration and technology training on wireless solutions for customers. Verizon Wireless offers 24 hour 7 day a week technical support for our mission-critical government customers. Continue »

Alabama Germany Partnership Presents Rainer Bauer Award to Governor Bob Riley
Governor Bob Riley received the Rainer Bauer Award at the Alabama Germany Partnership Annual Dinner on April 24.

Mercedes-Benz U.S. International CEO and President Bill Taylor presented Governor Bob Riley with the Rainer Bauer award on behalf of the Alabama Germany Partnership for his leadership role in recruiting German-based companies ThyssenKrupp Steel and Stainless USA, LLC. HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology Officially Opens Doors

“This is the future of Alabama.” With those words, Alabama Gov. Bob Riley dramatically emphasized the importance that the state and the Huntsville/Madison County community are placing on the HudsonAlpha Institute of Biotechnology, which celebrated its grand opening Thursday, April 24.

A standing room crowd of elected officials, scientists, researchers, residents and community leaders heard from Riley, founder Jim Hudson, HudsonAlpha director Dr. Rick Myers, Dr. Neil Lamb and other elected officials and scientists about the importance this center has in the world in finding ways to treat or cure human diseases currently considered untreatable.

The HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology is housed in a state-of-the-art, 270,000 square-foot facility located in the Cummings Research Park, the nation’s second largest research and technology park. HudsonAlpha has a three-fold mission of genomic research, economic development and educational outreach.

Chamber Attends Military Officers Association of America Career Fair

Mark Brown, recruitment director for the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce, recently attended the Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) career fair in Washington, D.C. The fair featured 162 employers and drew more than 500 highly skilled military officers interested in transitioning into the civilian workforce. Continue »

Applications for Next Leadership Huntsville Class Due May 23

Leadership programs provide monthly in-depth studies of specific topics as they relate to the community. These sessions include site visits, tours and interactive programs that provide participants with a better understanding of community issues and a greater appreciation of community resources. Team building exercises and personality assessments round out the program. In addition, participants discuss elements of exemplary leaders and apply those theories in community-wide impact projects during their program year. Continue »
