U.S. News & World Report and BusinessWeek Recognize Huntsville’s Strong Economy
Huntsville has once again been recognized by major publications for its strong, diverse economy. U.S. News & World Report recently named Huntsville among the top 10 places in the U.S. for technology jobs and BusinessWeek ranked Huntsville 4th among the nation’s strongest construction markets.

- Atlanta
- Boston
- Houston
- New York
- Phoenix
- San Diego
- San Francisco
- Seattle
- Washington, D.C.
The U.S. News reporter, Liz Wulgemuth, recognized Huntsville’s ranking among these much larger cities by saying, “A bit of an outlier on a list of extra large cities, Huntsville nonetheless boasts the nation's second-largest tech and research park, Cummings Research Park.”
The report also cites Huntsville’s numerous high-tech companies as well as the presence of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center and Redstone Arsenal.

Stronger Relationships Mean a Stronger Army
Members of Redstone Arsenal (RSA) and the Tennessee Valley community recently came together to welcome 86 families from Ft. Campbell, Kentucky and the 159th Combat Aviation Brigade (CAB) to the region. The retreat was for families of deployed soldiers and was designed to give participants learning tools for coping with the emotional stress and showing them that they are not alone.
As members of the world’s premier fighting force, military soldiers sacrifice for this country every day, and so do the families that stay behind. Military life places extreme hardship on relationships, especially in wartime, so the Army, backed by Congress, committed unprecedented resources to help soldiers build stronger relationships through the Strong Bonds Program.
Strong Bonds empowers soldiers and their loved ones with relationship-building skills, and connects them to community health and support resources. Strong Bonds has specialized programs for single Soldiers, couples and families. Those soldiers being deployed or redeployed can also learn special coping tactics.
Sandy Slinkard, a Chamber ambassador with Exit Leon Crawford Realty, attended the event and along with several other Chamber employees and Ambassadors put together welcome bags for attendees to take home with them. According to Slinkard, those who attended were amazed that any community would do what this community did to take the burden off their shoulders and help them relax. “They were very appreciative of what Huntsville had to offer them as a community,” said Slinkard.

Green U Kicks off at Botanical Garden
As part of an overall "Green" initiative, Huntsville Botanical Garden announced recently that "Green U - A Festival for the Environment" will be held at the Garden on Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. till 4 p.m.
This environmental festival will feature educational presentations by area experts, demonstrations by vendors of green products and activities for the entire family that encourage greener living.
“I'm excited that the City of Huntsville can take yet another step forward in becoming a national leader in green initiatives. I want to congratulate Paula Steigerwald and everyone else involved in organizing and planning this incredible event,” Mayor Tommy Battle said. “We were proud to announce the chartering of a first of its kind initiative for the City of Huntsville by establishing a goal for Huntsville to lead the nation in green sustainable initiatives.”
The festival is being organized by a group of volunteers from local businesses. Lori Severin, Sustainability Director for 4Site, Inc., an area land planning and design firm, is project chairman. Severin said she hopes the event will excite the community about a “green life.”
"We look to the community to come together and support this great initiative," Lori states. "Living green is more than a one day event. Our goal is to educate, inspire and excite the community to live a greener and more sustainable life."
The Green U committee is encouraging the business community and interested individuals to get involved as volunteers, sponsors, presenters and vendors. For information on organization can get involved, contact Severin at lseverin@4siteinc.biz. Potential sponsors should contact Tish Peques at the Garden at tpegues@hsvbg.org.

| City of Huntsville Pursues Monument to Honor Veterans
Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle is leading a petition drive for the Huntsville to receive a large granite memorial supporting the U.S. military. Mayor Battle has outlined three potential homes for the statue – including the planned Veterans’ Park in downtown Huntsville, the local Veterans’ Museum and on city property near one of the entrances to Redstone Arsenal.
“I have no doubt that dozens of communities, all strong in their own right, are expressing what they do to honor our veterans. In Huntsville, however, honoring veterans is not something we do – it’s part of who we are,” Battle writes in his letter. “I can think of no better home for this monument than Huntsville, Alabama. With our rich history of involvement with the United States Military and the deep roots that thousands of veterans have in our community we would provide a dignified home for this great statue.”
For the entire letter and to sign the petition, visit www.hsvcity.com/veterans
