Mayor Battle Discusses Huntsville on Fox Business

Mayor Tommy Battle
Success breeds success and the Huntsville/ Madison County continues to gain national media attention. Recently, Mayor Tommy Battle was a guest on the Fox Business program “Money for Breakfast.” Battle discussed Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC), Huntsville’s diversified economy and Standard & Poor’s AAA bond rating of the city in a segment highlighting Huntsville as a community doing well in spite of the recession.
The interview with Fox Business was just one part of the Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville/Madison County’s marketing trip to New York. During the trip, Chamber volunteers and staff met with other top-tier national and international publications, companies such as LG and L-3 Communications that have corporate offices in the New York area and site selection consultants.

Other economic development partners in New York for meetings included U.S. Representatives Parker Griffith and Robert Aderholt, officials with the Alabama Development Office, the North Alabama Industrial Development Association, the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Port of Huntsville.

A link to the video of the interview is available on the Chamber’s website. »

Augustine Commission Recap

The Augustine Commission (Click photo to enlarge)
The panel reviewing the nation’s plans for future space travel and exploration met in Huntsville last week for briefings on the Ares program and to receive reports from internal working groups and comments from the public. The Review of U.S. Human Space Flight Plans Committee, better known as the Augustine Commission in recognition of Norm Augustine, the Commission’s chairman, has a 90-day charter to make recommendations to the Obama Administration regarding future manned space programs.

While in Huntsville, the Commission heard from MSFC Director Robert Lightfoot and Ares program managers and directors about the system’s development. Approximately $3 billion has been spent to date developing Ares I plans, prototypes, simulators, hardware and testing equipment and ground support facilities. (click here to see a video of Ares I progress.)

Despite significant progress on Ares I, several commissioners seemed inclined to abandon the new vehicle in favor of extending the space shuttle and focusing more resources on extending the space station. Continue »

HudsonAlpha Adds Two Faculty Investigators

Huntsville continues to add to its cadre of world-renowned scientists with a recent announcement by the HudsonAlpha Institute for Biotechnology regarding the addition of faculty investigators Drs. Greg Barsh and Shawn Levy, both scientists bring experience in human diseases as it pertains to genetics and genomic research.

“This is a young organization and it is tremendously gratifying to attract outstanding scientists who will have a profound impact to not only the institute and its growth, but to the entire biomedical research field,” noted Richard Myers, director of HudsonAlpha. The skills and experience that Barsh and Levy bring, he added, are highly complementary to the institute’s current and planned programs of research.

Barsh, a physician-scientist who comes to HudsonAlpha from the Stanford University School of Medicine, has provided valuable insights to pigmentation biology, diabetes and obesity, neurodegeneration, bone marrow failure and melanoma, the most serious form of skin cancer.

Levy comes to HudsonAlpha from the Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he founded and directed the Vanderbilt Microarray Shared Resource. The VMSR is recognized as a world-class genomics facility that has attracted numerous clients.
