Calhoun Community College Announces Record Summer Semester Enrollment

Dr. Marilyn Beck, president of Calhoun Community College, recently announced that with a total of 6,237 students enrolled to date, the college has reached a record summer semester enrollment. Enrollment is up 11.7 percent, or 653 students, over last summer’s enrollment.

Enrollment by site is as follows: Decatur campus (day and evening): 2409; Huntsville campus (day and evening): 2402; Distance Education: 1244 and Limestone Correctional Facility: 182.

With registration continuing for the college’s second summer term, which starts July 8, enrollment numbers are expected to increase even further. Registration for the second term begins June 9; registration for the college’s 2009 fall semester is also underway.

“At a time when other higher education institutions continue to experience declines in enrollment, we continue to see relatively steady growth in our numbers,” commented Beck. “We feel that this helps to demonstrate that Calhoun is becoming even more the ‘institution of first choice’ to help students realize their educational and career goals,” she added.

According to Dr. Rob Steinmetz, Calhoun’s associate dean of enrollment management and college registrar, the greatest increases this summer are in day classes at both the Huntsville/Cummings Research Park and Decatur campuses and in the college’s distance education courses.

“With the many commitments and challenging schedules many of our students face, our distance education classes continue to grow in popularity because they provide a scheduling option that in some cases offers more flexibility than a traditional classroom experience,” Steinmetz said.
