Huntsville Ranked Fifth Best Performing City
in the Country
Technology-Based Metros Top 2008 Best-Performing Cities Index
The sun continues to shine on Huntsville regarding national recognition and rankings. The latest recognition shows Huntsville being named the fifth best performing city in the country in the Milken Institute/Greenstreet Real Estate Partners 2008 Best-Performing Cities Index. Huntsville was ranked 16th in the U.S. in 2007.
Don Nalley, the Chamber’s vice chair for economic development and the director of Beason & Nalley, said he was excited to see Huntsville’s continued economic growth being recognized nationally.
“All in our community that work so hard to improve the economy and in general the lives of our citizens should be thrilled with the 2008 Milken Best-Performing Cities Index,” Nalley said. “The fact that Huntsville is listed fifth in this 2008 study is a major improvement from our 16 ranking in 2007 and our 28 ranking in 2005.” Continue »

Integrated Air and Missile Defense Project Office Holds Ribbon Cutting and Open House

Huntsville Mayor Loretta Spencer; Robert Tomas, Project Manager of Integrated Air and Missile Defense; Brigadier General Genaro DellaRocco, Program Executive Officer, Missiles and Space; and Evans Quinlivan, Chairman of Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce cut the ribbon at the new IAMD Project Office.

The Integrated Air and Missile Defense (IAMD) Project Office recently held a ribbon cutting and open house for their new location.
“The opening of this facility is just one of the many ways we are developing new capabilities for the Army,” said Brigadier General Genaro Dellarocco, Program Executive Officer Missiles and Space.
“When you look around this high technology community that is so laden with aerospace and defense capabilities, please understand that when we discuss Huntsville being one of the true epicenters of our national defense initiative, at this office people are making this happen every day,” said Evans Quinlivan, Chair of the Huntsville/Madison County Chamber of Commerce. Business Expo Classes
The Chamber of Commerce of Huntsville/Madison County will host a series of one-hour training classes at the 2008 Business Expo, Oct. 23 from 1 - 6 p.m. at the Von Braun Center South Hall. The sessions will focus on small businesses and the basic foundation that an entrepreneur will need to maintain stability and growth. The topics include:

Huntsville Recognized as one of 100 Best Communities for Young People
America’s Promise Alliance recently named Huntsville part of the “100 Best Communities for Young People.” Members of Hands On Greater Huntsville will travel to Washington, D.C. to accept the award.
“The 100 Best National Forum is a very special event because it allows us to honor those communities across the country that exemplify what it means to care and support our young people,” said Marguerite W. Kondracke, president and CEO of America’s Promise Alliance.

Margaret Hoelzer Launches the “Hoelzer Hamburger” at Ketchup to Benefit The National Children’s Advocacy Center
Beginning on Saturday, September 20, Ketchup will offer the “Hoelzer Hamburger”, which was custom designed by Hoelzer. The Dolce Group will donate $2 from every purchase of a “Hoelzer Hamburger” through October 31, 2008 to The National Children’s Advocacy Center.
Margaret will be at Ketchup on Saturday, September 20, from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. to help with the launch of the new “Hoelzer Hamburger” and to sign autographs.
The “Hoelzer Hamburger” is a 10 ounce certified Angus beef patty seasoned with Montreal Steak Seasoning and grilled to perfection. It is topped with a slice of Aged Cheddar Cheese and Muenster Cheese, Pico de Gallo, Red Onion, Organic Tomato slice, and slices of Haas Avocado, on a lightly toasted Kaiser Bun.
The National Children’s Advocacy Center is a non-profit organization that offers clinical services to children, and their non- offending family members and caregivers, who are victims of abuse. Such services include individual and group therapy as well as specialized medical and legal services.

Huntsville Firm Wins Award for Proactive Safety Stance
Tintronics, a Huntsville-based company supporting the area’s electronic manufacturing industry, has been presented a rarely bestowed award for safety under the Occupational Safety and Health Adminstration’s (OSHA) Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program (SHARP). Only 19 businesses in the state currently qualify for the award.The award was presented by Dr. Bill Weems, Director, OSHA Safe State Program, University of Alabama in a ceremony at the company’s Huntsville plant. MTS Gains Education Certification
Manufacturing Technical Solutions, Inc., is now a Registered Education Provider (R.E.P.) as certified by the Project Management Institute (PMI).
Seasoned professionals in their Perimeter Park conference center teach project management training courses. Instructors have diverse industry experience in both government and commercial sectors, allowing for real-world relevance to the course curriculum.
Two, four-hour courses are being offered through the end of the year. Project Management in a Government Environment is an introductory course and provides a basic understanding of project management in both the government and commercial arenas. Project Life Cycles and Organizational Influences examines private sector versus government life cycles and takes students through several examples.
Professional Development Units (PDUs) are offered for each completed course.

Pratt & Whitney Rocetdyne Announces Directors for PoWeR
PoWeR Innovations is a creative organization to help PWR expand into new business areas and capitalize on emerging opportunities.Scott Claflin has been named director of PoWeR Innovations for PWR. He will be responsible for establishing and managing this organization to capitalize on emerging markets through technologies and concepts being developed by the company. Most recently, Scott was manager of the Advanced Technology office at PWR, and has been acting manager for the Advanced Propulsion Development group.
