Olympic Gold Medalist Jennifer Chandler spoke about the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame's Outreach Program and Annual "World's Largest Shotgun Start Golf Tournament" at The Chamber's Board of Directors Meeting in July.

Chandler, who won a gold medal at the 1976 Montreal Olympics in the three-meter springboard dive, spoke to the Chamber about the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame and its second annual Nationwide Insurance ASHOF Championship-Qualifying Golf Tournament to be held Monday, Oct. 6. The “World’s Largest Shotgun Start Golf Tournament” will be played on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail courses from Muscle Shoals to Mobile and begins at 1 p.m.

The ASHOF Outreach program is an educational, interactive fieldtrip intended for schoolchildren in grades three though eight. The trip teaches students about the achievements of Alabama natives in the sports world and ties in schoolwork to real world applications such as research skills, calculating mathematical equations to find batting averages, history, reading comprehension and geography. In addition to the academic skills developed from the Outreach program, students learn principles of goal setting, perseverance, dedication and discipline.

Registration for the tournament is limited to 25 groups at each location; therefore, participants are advised to register as soon as possible. The cost per foursome is $700, $175 per player. Single applicants may also complete an application at any participating Nationwide Insurance office or RTJ Golf Trail course and mail in or fax in their application along with their payment information.

Winners in low gross and low net from each of the tournament’s locations will play in a championship match held at Ross Bridges in Birmingham on Oct. 20 beginning at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. Ross Bridges, a RTJ Golf Trail course, was the site of the annual Regions Bank Charity Classic, a PGA Champions Tour event.
