                  "GREEN means GO"
09 Annual Appeal   For those hikers who are already in good physical shape and want to hike with others on Land Trust trails for exercise.   "GREEN means GO" hikers will move at a FAST pace.  Should it rain the day before, participants are asked to meet at Weatherly Elementary School for a five mile street hike. 
    Avid hiker and Land Trust staff member Kim Arnold (with her famous dog Sparky) will take the lead on six hikes that will be true aerobic exercise.  Call  The Land Trust office at 256-534-5263 or see our website for details and directions.

 2010 Land Trust Guided Hike Series

Hikes are free to the public - donations to help preserve greenspace are gratefully accepted.
Hiking Equipment: long pants, comfortable shoes with good tread & bottled water.  In case of rain, hikes will be cancelled.

(App. 6 hr. hike / Difficult
Once the hunting grounds of Davy Crockett, "The Walls" are one of Forever Wild's most popular properties. Preserving "The Walls of Jericho" also protects the headwaters of the Paint Rock River in North Alabama.  Join Land Trust Board member Mike Dalen and staffer Kim Arnold for an unforgettable outing.  "GREEN means GO" hikers are especially invited.

(1 hour / Easy with moderate incline)
Join botanist Lynne Weninegar for a fun tour of The Land Trust trail named for its claim to fame: beautiful wildflowers.  Bring your camera and learn more about the stars of this Blossomwood trail.

       Wildflower Stroll on Rainbow Mountain

(2-3 hours / Moderate to difficult / App. 3 miles) 
Doug Horacek will help you identify invasive plants, as well as Alabama native wildflowers.   See famous Balance Rock.  This slow mountain stroll includes stops to learn more about the flowers

                                  The Matthews Farm in Limestone County
Join us on this easy to moderate hike through a natural botanical garden.  Fields of wildflowers lead to Limestone Creek.  Perfect for photographers and artists!

 

 


*Sunday, April 25 @ 2:00 pm       Trough Springs: Historical Civil War Site    
(2 hours / Moderate to difficult due to elevation change / App. 2 miles)
Land Trust Board member David Young will discuss the historical significance of Trough Springs and, in particular, stories about the Civil War exploits of Lt. Col. Milus E. "Bushwhacker" Johnston and his dramatic surrender to Union Forces on May 11, 1865.

Land Trust Board member Jim Chamberlain will lead nature lovers of all ages on city of Madison trails.  You'll see Rainbow Mountain points of interest, including Balance Rock.

      Monte Sano's Old Railroad Bed Trail on Mother's Day

(App. 1.5 miles / Moderate)
Perfect new hikers or the whole family!  History comes alive this Mother's Day on Monte Sano (Mountain of Health).   The Old Railroad Bed Trail follows the same path as the steam locomotive that traveled from the Huntsville Depot to the Monte Sano Hotel from 1888 until 1896.  Enjoy this bit of Huntsville's past with David Young.  We especially welcome our new members to this
spring hike.

      On the Trail of Wild Columbo on Wade Mountain

(2 hours / Easy to moderate/ App. 2.5 miles)
Lynne Weninegar will lead you on an exploration of Wade Mountain Nature Preserve's microclimate, cedar groves, and the sometimes elusive biennial Columbo.
